it was a tough year for a lot of people. >> i think we should start 2013 off with a national bloody mary. >> also today is national bloody mary day. all right? this is serious. pay attention. we don't know why, but it has something to do with the people at mrs. t, or whatever their name is. people buy these holidays, i think. >> i don't care. i'm all for that. >> hopefully you're not suffering this morning. what did you do last night, hoda? >> i was wild and crazy. me and my sister did head rolls. we really had everyone going. >> frank and bambino and i did too. even all you young people out there, you think you've got it great, you don't. you think you've got it great because you're off and doing stuff. you have no idea how great it gets when you are old. >> sitting in your jammies. >> it's so bad. >> the thing about new year's is the anticipation and the with windup is always so much better than the actual event. >> it's a disappointment.

>> intuition, a hunch. no matter what you call it, gut sixth sense. no matter what you call it, gut feelings can be a pretty powerful tool when it comes to making important choices in your life. >> is it better to trust your instinct or intellect? dr. carrie peterson is a contributor to "women's health magazine" and dr. janet taylor is a psychiatrist here in new york city. hi, ladies. >> there's something to this, isn't there? the gut instinct. many of us rely on it. but it's not foolproof. >> well, it's not foolproof, but the thing to remember is that even though we say the gut, it's still your brain. so what's happening is focused through your brain, but it's a matter of saying do i need to make a quick decision and not focus on a list and just make the decision. >> sometimes there's like a physical reaction. let's say someone is walking down the street, and you feel spooked, and your gut tells you i'm not -- i shouldn't stay here, i feel uncomfortable, i should cross the street. should you just follow what is going on there? >> you absolutely should. when there's a situation that

you feel in danger, pay attention to it. the thing is that society has trained us to be polite, so often we ignore those gut feelings. >> why are we rude to one another when we've been trained to be -- >> that's a little different. this is more you don't want to offend someone. you want to make them feel comfortable when you feel very uncomfortable. >> that's part of the whole agenda as well if it's something we've been trained. give them a chance. you don't know who they are. they may be going for a new look. >> if you feel like something is not right, cross that street. you do get physical symptoms. your heart may sweat, your heart may race. there are physical signs. >> sometimes if you -- let's pretend someone has hurt me in the past physically, and i walk down the street and get a bad feeling about someone. i'm used to that, and i'm afraid of more things. sometimes your gut isn't right, is it? >> there's a difference between insight, which is made on those decisions that are in your awareness, you've had a past experience.

what we're talking about intuition is something that just pops up, and it really brings the unconscious to your awareness, and it gives you an opportunity to make a quick decision. hopefully you'll use your intuition, but we're not talking about if you have lost thousands of dollars doing one thing to keep doing that. you have to pay attention to the past, but be willing to just jump in. >> let's pretend you're at the doctor's office, and you don't feel good, and the doctor says, look, it's in your head, you're fine. inside you keep thinking to yourself i don't feel good. what's -- your gut is telling thaw the doctor is wrong, but he or she is the doctor. >> supposedly the expert. >> physicians may overlook certain symptoms, especially if you are a young and healthy woman simply because they may dismiss your fears as paranoia. male physicians can do that. they can attribute it to depression or pms. nobody knows your body like you do, so if you feel your physician is not paying attention to something that you feel you have a hunch is wrong, get a second opinion. >> people say it's paranoia and not intuition. >> if you're not sure if i'm having truly this gut feeling or being a hypochondriac. try to be in tune to your feelings about it. when it's fear, you have more

emotionally-charged emotions. when it's intuition, it's oddly impersonal. >> that's interesting. >> not only that, people who rely on their intuition are more adaptable and go with the flow, whereas those who always have the measure the maximizers tend to be per -fictionists, fictionists, and they can be harder on themselves at the end of a decision. >> yeah. sometimes if you are interviewing someone, let's say, for a job, someone can be very charming, and you can say, wow, i'm really taken with them. i like them. your instinct may tell you -- your intuition may tell you they're a good person, but deep down inside you don't know the layers. sometimes you're off. >> this would be a situation where i would recommend using your head over your gut. because someone's personality may lure you in, remind you of a close friend. you may be more inclined to potentially hire them. however you need to look at their work history, recommendation letters and don't be impulsive with the decision.

means you can get in the shot. normally it works. >> all right. >> our next tech trend is mobile payments. everybody is trying to figure out how to get your mobile phone to be your wallet in a safe and secure way. what we have right now is something that is popping up in some stores called google wallet. this uses a new technology called near field applications. it's not available in all phones. it's limited to the android. it's sort of being slow to catch on. what's coming is this new technology called level up. it's a new app. >> i can see you like. >> i really like it. it's on my phone. now, it knows where you are, so it's going to show me here that i am at the nbc store and then so there is me at the nbc store, and then when i'm ready to pay, i'm just going to wave it in front of this device at my retailer. now it zapped my phone and i paid with my credit card.

there's no credit card information on the app, so it's very secure. >> nobody can scan it. and steal your i.d. >> that's right. that's right. how fun to be able to do that in other places? >> they're catching on with thousands of retailers already. more and more. available for iphones as well as android. okay. >> my phone won't work on that, though? >> you need to replace it. junker. >> we'll talk. >> our next trend is the internet of things. if you haven't heard this term yet, you'll hear a lot of it. it's basically about how physical objects are being armed with wireless sensors that you can talk to, that talk to app and give you information. i think the example we all know right now is the nike plus that goes in your shoe, tells you where you ran and how far. >> right. >> what's coming, brand new from phillips is a system called hue. these are light bulbs that go into your regular lamp, led light bulbs. they last forever. and you can control them with your device. >> what is going on? >> so check this out.

not only can you dim them, but you can change their color, and you can set all these different mood settings for them. >> oh, groovy, baby. >> i love it. >> from your ipad. >> that's so cool. >> our last tech trend is wearable tech. the lines are literally being blurred between what is clothing, what is technology. tech is literally being sewn into the fabric of our clothes. this is something that exists right now. it's the contour roam 2 camera that you can strap to your helmet and you get a bird's eye view of what you are doing. what's coming, and this is brand new. it's not available yet. this is a little device called momoto. you put it on the clothing. when it's vertical, it knows that it's on, and it is taking pictures. it's literally giving you a photographic memory. >> you better be careful what you do. >> who you're talking to. >> that's right. >> at the end of the day, you can literally see things that you had forgotten. there's memories that you didn't even really absorb, and it's a way to be reflective, and it's very seamless. there's all kinds of things coming with t-shirts that can read your twitter feed and project it and take pictures of

the canal ring will be celebrating 400 years in existence. it was built during the golden age. >> still a wonder how they do it. >> it's so beautiful. the van gogh museum is finally reopening in april. you get to see real masterpieces there. the rice museum. it's such a beautiful city. >> it's clean. >> yeah. >> it's bikeable and walkable. you know, it's -- there's really no bad time to go really. >> let's go to the far east, shall we? seoul, korea. >> i mean, love it or leave it. gangnam style has infiltrated all of our lives at some point. it's brought some fresh enthusiasm for the capital of korea, and it's really a good time to go because this is a thriving metropolis. it's vibrant, sprawling, and it's also a very modern city. one of the most wired cities on the planet. it's full of history. their palace and street markets that haven't changed for decades. the food is amazing. i love the food. the food has also made a lot of influence worldwide with chefs right now.

if you are going to go do go to gangnam, which is a district south of the hahn river. it's like the beverly hills of seoul. there are lots of shops and boutiques and restaurants. 24-hour spas. you have to stay at the park heights seoul there. it's the spot. killer views from the shower. >> wow. >> i like her. >> u.s. cities. nashville is a real hot spot this year. it's where all the young, vibrant, creative types are going. and it's really good for two reasons, food and music. >> food. >> girl has got to eat. food is really fantastic. it's at the center of this new southern cuisine that's becoming very popular. >> i worked there for a year and gained 15 pounds because of everything was deep fried. it's come a long way. >> it's come a long way. you can still get the deep fried. the spicy fried chicken there that we all love and know, and then just on the music side i'm sure that the tradition of the

also a clipper system taking shape in the northern plains will bring a little bit of snow. not going to amount to much, but it will help reinforce that cold air. so high temperatures staying below the freezing mark in chicago, over to minneapolis. it's still going to be very cold from kansas city to louisville. and 30s. that's going to be it for you in the northeast. it's going to be a cold day in the northeast as well. that clipper system moving across the great lakes on thursday. still come rain hanging around the southeast. and those temperatures are still going to remain very frigid, three degrees cooler from wednesday to thursday in chicago. now 28 degrees for the high temperature. that is going to be a cold one for you. some of the coldest air of the season. wind chills make it feel even cooler. 50 degrees in atlanta on thursday. very quiet across the country on friday. a few showers possible throughout parts of south texas, new england. might see a few snowshowers. then another system taking shape on saturday. but still not really looking for

much precipitation with it. mainly just going to see more of that cold air in play. so we are in wintertime now in a big way. at least it's going to feel like it for the northern tier of the country. at least most of the northern tier of the country. getting the northern plains. then on sunday still some showers coming off of the great lakes. so we could see a little bit of snow, parts of pennsylvania, ohio, and new york. temperatures staying cool all the way down. just about to the gulf coast. right along the gulf coast we'll see readings into the 60s. on monday a chance for showers with another system moving into the pacific northwest. but quiet throughout the country. midsection into the northeast and much of the east coast. remember on the weather channel week days starting at 5:30 a.m. eastern you can wake up with al and stephanie. i played a round of golf.id in the last five hours? then i read a book while teaching myself how to play guitar; ran ten miles while knitting myself a sweater; jumped out of a plane.

it's brunch. the next day we're going to do an omelet. we're doing a potato chip omelet. about a dozen eggs. we're going to mixup our eggs in here. a cup of parmesan. parsley we're going to throw in there. white cheddar, we're going to throw in there, and a little bit of milk or cream. >> that looks like heavy cream, doesn't it? >> it could be milk, though. >> if you want to -- you kind of need the calories the day after, right? i think. then all of the potato chips. >> what? >> throw them in there. >> are you kidding? >> listen, this is going to soak for, like, 30 minutes to an hour, and then we're going to start cooking. >> we're going to make ours? >> kath, get your own. >> like every good executive, i do very little work. we're going to throw butter into each pan here. >> hoda. >> we're good. we're good. don't worry. a little bit of butter in there, and then we have our potato chip omelet measured out. right into the pan. it's measured out.
